Technological change has the potential to benefit lives in every way

Returning from a recent business trip, I was impressed by the steps taken by the London airport at which I had landed to make the arrivals process more efficient. I scanned my passport at the automatic gate and was quickly on my way.

It was only as I glided up the escalator towards the exit that I began to think about the border guard who would previously have checked my passport. Then I thought about the person who would have looked at my boarding card at security on my outbound flight, before that too was automated.    

I hope and expect that those people have other jobs at the airport – we could all do with more people at security.
